Field Report
Azerbaijan is a small country tucked between Russia, Iran, and the Caspian Sea, right where Europe and Asia meet on a rugged stretch of land called the Caucasus. It is home to ancient cities, fire-lit hillsides, and a people with a rich culture that stretches back thousands of years. Most people there have grown up following Islam and have had very little chance to hear about Jesus.

Azerbaijan sits on the Caspian Sea, which is actually the largest landlocked body of water on Earth — so big that explorers once thought it was an ocean.
The country's name likely means 'Land of Fire' in an old Persian language, and natural gas seeping through the ground has caused some fires there to burn for centuries without ever going out.
Azerbaijan was the first Muslim-majority country in the world to give women the right to vote, doing so in 1918.
Baku, the capital, sits below sea level — meaning the city is actually lower than the surface of the ocean.
Azerbaijan has more mud volcanoes than any other country on earth — strange, bubbling mounds of earth that burp mud and gas up through the ground — with more than 350 of them dotting the countryside.
